Just a short 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town, Prison Island — also called Changuu Island — is one of Zanzibar’s most popular half-day excursions. Once intended as a prison in the 19th century, the ruins remain as a testament to its history. Today, the island is best known for its colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 150 years old! Visitors can feed and interact with these gentle giants, explore the old stone buildings, and then enjoy snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters with vibrant corals and colorful fish. Surrounded by turquoise seas and white sandy shores, Prison Island offers a perfect blend of history, wildlife, and tropical relaxation.
The tour usually lasts 3–4 hours, including the boat transfer. Ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers who want a mix of history, nature, and adventure.
We loved meeting the giant tortoises! Snorkeling was beautiful and the island has such a unique history. Definitely a must-do in Zanzibar.
A short boat ride and suddenly you’re in paradise. Feeding the tortoises was amazing. Great mix of history and fun.
